It had been a busy day today.
Here is what Pak Lah's administration has achieved:
On restoration of democracy : None of the myriad of repressive laws has been repealed or amended.
On corruption : It has worsened. Transparency International Corruption Perception Index shows Malaysia's ranking has dropped from 37th in 2003 to 39th in 2004.
On press freedom : It has not improved. In the Annual Worldwide Press Index 2004 of Reporters sans Frontier (RSF), Malaysia's ranking has dropped from 104th to 122nd, out of 167 countries.
On parliamentary reforms : No improvement. It remains an unabashed "rubber stamp" of the Executive. - (Although, we have a world class parliament infrastructure.)

馬來亞銀行近日通知其所有指定律師，從今年7月1日起，馬來亞銀行將修改委任指定律師的標準，並給現有指定律師樓直到2008年7月1日期限以符合新規定，包括律師樓擁有至少3位合作伙伴，其中至少1名為土著伙伴及有關土著伙伴在公司擁有至少50%股權。
大馬律師公會指出，除了馬來亞銀行，另一家主導銀行也將落實類似的規定。大馬律師公會也對這項決定感到不滿，因為根據估計，至少有半數大馬律師樓無法符合相關銀行發出的規定。

Scandals
Within month of assuming office, Pak Lah's government was rocked by a series of scandals. These include failure of numerous infrastructure projects that include hospitals, highways and schools etc, squandering of public funds on luxury, damages to environment and corrupt alienation of state lands. All these are traced to corruption, abuse of power and gross negligence as root causes (BUT who?)
For example:
MATRADE Building (RM400 million): not completed after 10 years. -> (I suggest it was contractor's problem!!! So what?)
MRR2 Kepong Flying (RM240 million): extensive cracks at the structures. -> (I suggest it was because Malaysia's tanker / truck too heavy to make it crack, no people to blame!!!)
Sultan Ismail Hospital, Pandan, JB (RM560 million): extensive fungus infection (completion had already been delayed for several years). -> Walau, I suggest we need another 100 years to build a hospital. 10 years too short, this can become a quality issue!!!)

My mother-in-law is a traditional woman and of course, she was born in Malaysia, just like many of us.
This evening, we overheard her conversation with a friend. Not surprisingly, she told her friend that she's thinking to "go back - 回" (actually is travel) to China. Both of my daughter and myself felt funny to her message - "go back". But, think deeply...we may need to "go back" one day in near future .. who knows?
Young generation, like me ^.^ (30+) always think that we are Malaysian. But, unfortunately, we have been classified as bumiputra and non-bumiputra (The ONLY in the WORLD after South-Africa eliminated his unfair policy).

In any hierarchy, when the leader displays weakness, the next in the line tends to become more powerful. And that is how we must view Malaysia's deputy prime minister, Najib Tun Razak (her father, Tun Razak - blog on 06 05 07).
Najib has ascended in power rapidly since the day he was belatedly named the DPM. That day must have seemed quite remote to him now, after being accustomed to his present enhanced position of power. But that occasion could also be quite unforgettablem, for it was the day he felt immense relief - from two months of suspense and anguish, not knowing whether his boss Pak Lah wouls pick his as the deputy.
What were the reasons behind Pak Lah appointed Najib?
Pak Lah's favourite was Muhyiddin Yasin, with whom he would have felt much more comfortable. As things turned out, Pak Lah deferred to his former boss Mahathir who seemed to be quite insistent that Najib be made the deputy. Besides, Pak Lah wasn't sure that there wouldn't be a revolt in his hand if Najib was not appointed.

The Reluctant Politician Tun Dr Ismail and his time
Razak and Ismail presented the New Economic Policy (NEP) which contemplated state intervention through public corporations by taking affirmative action to reduce the imbalance between the races caused by the colonial economic structure.
According to Ismail:
"I regard the special position of the Malays as a handicap given to the Malays with the consent of all the other races who have become citizens of this country so as to enable the Malays to compete on equal footing for equal opportunity in this country. That and that alone is the only aim of the special position of the Malays."
Ismail went on to elaborate:
"....this handicap will enable them to be good players, as in golf, and in time the handicap will be removed. The Malays must not think of these privileges as permanent: for then, they will not put their efforts to the tasks. In fact, it is an insult for Malays to be getting these privileges."
Hence, his suggestion that a 20-year limit be imposed on the NEP. Ismail was concerned to ensure that the special privileges conferred on the Malays were not at the expense of the non-Malays. Thus, he pushed for increased economic growth. Ismail's aim was a place for every Malaysian under the Malaysian sun.

尽管人民公正党在刚举行的依约州议席补选中落败，但是该党顾问安华看来毫不气馁，反而将依约补选视为三大反对党紧密合作，人民站起来争取权益的起点。
“依约是人民阵线站起来争取权益，对抗欺骗抢夺人民的残暴执政者的起点！”
安华是在昨晚于回教党鹅麦总部向超过1千名反对党支持者这么表示。
在这场类似激励大会的讲座上，安华强调，虽然国阵将全国所有的资源和力量都倾注在依约补选中，但是公正党依然取得不俗的成绩。
对于反对党在依约补选中的顽强抗争斗志，安华将之名为“依约精神”，并发表了“依约宣言”。
他要求在场的所有出席者将“依约精神”发扬广大，不再只满足于旁观者的角色，而是成为行动者，以实际行动对抗病入膏肓的国阵政府。
安华激动地向出席者呼吁，“我们清楚知道目前的贪污猖獗，政府已经无药可救......这个国家太过分了，治理国家的是一群不配受到尊敬的海盗！”
